The Story of Windy Mountain Farm

We are a family-run farm located on the side of Mount Pleasant in Williamstown, Vermont. Our adventures in tree farming started in 2007, when we purchased 35 balsam fir seedlings and planted them in a field on our homestead. We continued to plant tiny Christmas tree plugs every spring and watched in wonder as our field slowly grew into a beautiful plantation. In 2016, we began to experiment with growing our trees from seed, starting with a small packet of 50. We stratified the seeds in the bottom crisper drawer of our fridge for 30 days, planted them in trays and patiently waited for them to germinate. To our surprise, one by one they began to sprout and we had a successful tiny crop. We continued to experiment for the next several years tweaking the growing medium, fertilizer, and growing environment. In 2019, we erected a 20 x 50 greenhouse on our property and planted our largest crop of over 25,000 seeds. We excitedly watched as the tiny plants emerged from the soil and reached for the light. The tiny trees spent their first year of life in the greenhouse and by summer were ready to plant in the ground to grow, prosper, and be admired for many years to come.

Here at Windy Mountain Farm, we are proud to say that every seed is hand planted, cared for, and packaged with love by us, Beckie, Tyson, Kaylie, and baby Kendal. We believe that small family farms can make a big difference in the world that we all share, one tree at a time.
